JOB TITLE:            COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER TRAINEE

 

DEPARTMENT:        WIREGRASS E911

 

REPORTS TO:         COMMUNICATIONS TRAINING OFFICER

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

During training period, observes and participates in the operations and monitoring of radio dispatch and telephone systems – utilizing multi-channels and frequencies in the Communications Center; receives emergency and administrative calls from the public and dispatches appropriate personnel.

 

 

 

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

TRAINED UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION:

 

Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio communications traffic for Police, EMS, Fire and Sheriff’s Departments throughout the county under the direction of a certified training officer.

 

Receives and screens 911 emergency and non-emergency calls from citizens of Long and McIntosh Counties and other public safety agencies; assist callers over the phone to obtain accurate and pertinent information and enters information into CAD; maintaining and updating CAD information on calls as needed; categorizes and prioritizes calls during emergency situations.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

◦Become knowledgeable with the regulations and procedures of state and national crime

information center.

◦Become knowledgeable in the geography and road system of Long and McIntosh Counties.

◦Become knowledgeable in the use of radio codes used in public safety.

◦Become knowledgeable of standard operating procedures of customer agencies.

◦Become knowledgeable of dispatching procedures for various agencies.

◦Demonstrate skill in the operation of radio, communications, and recording equipment.

◦Demonstrate skill in operating a computer and standard office equipment.

◦Demonstrate skill in typing rapidly and accurately.

◦Demonstrate skill in dealing with the public and emergency response service personnel.

◦Demonstrate skill in gathering information

◦Demonstrate skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.

◦Demonstrate skill in reading maps.

◦Demonstrate skill in interpersonal relations.

◦Demonstrate skill in oral and written communications.

◦Other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Director and/or Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The Communications Training Officer will review the work for accuracy, compliance with instructions, and nature and propriety of final results.

 

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include federal and state laws, county ordinances, GCIC/NCIC procedures, and department policies and procedures.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical dispatching duties.  The need to respond quickly to emergency situations contributes to the complexity of the work.

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to train an individual to receive incoming calls and dispatch the appropriate emergency personnel.  Successful performance helps ensure the protection of community life and property.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other public safety agencies, representatives of service and support agencies, and the general public.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while sitting at a console.  The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of knowledge.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed in a dispatch center that is often

 noisy.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

   ◦ Must be able to work 12 hour rotating shifts, to include weekends and holidays.

   ◦ Have a high school diploma or GED.

   ◦ Type 30 wpm.

   ◦ Possess good communication skills and ability to multitask.

   ◦ Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation, drug screen, vision and           hearing assessment.

   ◦Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated       with the completion of high school or equivalent.

   ◦Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.

   ◦Possession of or the ability to acquire the required certifications during the one year training period to move to the position of Communications Officer.
